What you need to know about Azure Reserved Instances, AHB and WVD

I think most of you have probably heard or read about Reserved Instances (RI) and Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) before. If so, keep reading anyway because I’ve noticed that it is often unclear how these types of contracts work – and I’m here to help. What are the “rules” exactly? What are Azure Ephemeral disks, how to use them with WVD, and why care?

Ephemeral OS disks are a form stateless disk storage. They are created on the virtual machine’s local storage (as part of the available VM cache, read on below) and are not written/saved to Azure Blob storage. This makes them ideal for stateless workloads, providing lower latency and thus faster read and write times. As always, there are multiple pros and cons to consider.

Not necessarily a new topic, though, I might be able to provide a different angle. I won’t go into the details of what WVD is, how it works and why it is a good fit for a ton of companies world-wide. What I will do is give you an example of how to use the Azure calculator for WVD in a slightly different way.
