HTML5 based browser clients, are they any good? Awingu has you covered

Straightforward, low maintenance, and supported on all devices running a Browser, that were and still are some of the main “selling points” with regards to HTML5 based VDI/RDSH clients. Simple? Sure, but not without challenges. Let’s have a closer look and see what comes up.

In detail — VMware’s Blast Extreme protocol

If you are using VMware Horizon/View for VDI, publishing applications and/or Hosted Shared Desktops you have the choice between three protocols: PCoIP, RDP and Blast Extreme, with RDP basically being the fallback protocol when all else fails. Here it’s important to note that Blast has been around for some time in the form of a HTML5 client used through HMTL5 compatible web browsers — available as of VMware Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1. It is the ‘Extreme’ part that is (still relatively) new.

I’m not in Las Vegas and I wasn’t able to catch the Summit Keynote live stream on the partner channel, honestly, I didn’t see a thing. All I could do was keep a close eye on my Twitter feed, which I did (so no NDA for me). Luckily it worked out pretty well. I’m sure I don’t have all the ins and outs and there are probably a few announcements that I’ve missed, those in Vegas will have some more detailed information I’m sure, but that doesn’t stop me from sharing what I did found out.
